Some top tips from travel insurance experts

    Our expert says

"Good to know – only a handful of insurers including SCTI and CoverMore can cover you for trip cancellations or changes before your journey because of an unexpected event . The majority don't do this. They only cover you for certain reasons . So for example, if your flight was cancelled or delayed for a reason not listed in the PDS, you might not be covered."

Travel insurance: 4 things you need to know

    Number 1

Travel insurance doesn't protect you from yourself

Your claim will be voided if the insurer finds that you failed to act responsibly. Consider this before you have a few too many drinks on your trip or jump on a moped without a helmet.

    Number 2

Rules about renting motorcycles and scooters on your holiday

Travel insurance will only cover you if you're riding with an Australian motorcycle licence or a valid licence in that country. You also need to be wearing a helmet and stick to a specific engine size.

    Number 3

You might need to pay more for activities such as skiing and motorcycling

This can be added when applying online. You'll find that most Australian insurers have a list of activities in the PDS which are covered for free.

    Number 4

You won't always be covered for natural disasters and pandemics

If you buy your policy after a natural disaster or a pandemic becomes a "known event" (e.g. it's in the news), you typically won't be covered, with the exception of the COVID-19 pandemic.

"We recently had to cancel a trip to Europe due to a family emergency, resulting in thousands of dollars lost in tickets, accommodation bookings and more. Thankfully we had travel insurance through our credit card which made sure we were covered from when we booked. We received all money lost back in full for anything we couldn’t cancel."

Hi, I have a very specific requirement for travel insurance – I need to find an insurer whose cancellation policy includes being able to fly home for a funeral of a family member who is both over 85 and in a nursing home. Thanks!

        Hi Jen,

Thanks for reaching out! We have a page that shows travel insurance providers for family emergencies such as death. It says on the page that travel insurance can help you recover your cancellation costs including pre-booked tickets and hotels, costs associated with returning home at short notice, and costs associated with resuming your journey at a later date. Most insurers have the following conditions:

        • The person must meet the insurer’s definition of a relative
        • The person must be under a specified age limit (according to the travel insurance policy)
        • The death or illness must be unexpected

This guide outlines the benefits and conditions that apply to trip cancellation cover, including the resumption of the journey and pre-existing medical conditions.

Hope this was helpful. Don’t hesitate to message us back if you have more questions.

        Best,
        Nikki

Me and my partner are travelling on the same dates both to Mexico. We are flying in different flights and to different cities in Mexico. We will spend some days together and some days appart. I notice that couple insurance is cheaper than two singles. Can we buy couple and dont lose any benefit specially when making a claim? or should we buy two singles?

        Hey Jose,

        Thanks for getting in touch!

You’re right, getting a couples policy will generally be cheaper but you need to make sure that you read the fine print once you’ve chosen an insurer you like, to make sure that you’re covered. Generally, insurers will require that you both have the same departure and return dates, but some may also specify a certain percentage of time that you need to travel together to be eligible for a couples policy. You may find our couples travel insurance page to be helpful. Have a great trip!

        Cheers,
        Zahra

I am trying to find the right travel insurance for my partner and myself that will also include insurance for riding a motorcycle (125cc Yamaha NVX Moped) in Vietnam. Neither of us have a Australian motorcycle licence, BUT we both have a Class A1 Vietnamese Licence (between 50cc and 175cc). Some insures PDS state that you must have an Australian Licence and a licence for the country you are riding in. Others state that you must have an Australian licence OR a licence that you are riding in. We are just trying to find the best cover.

      Thanking you.

        Hi Steve,

Thank you for getting in touch with Finder.

You may start comparing your motorcycle travel insurance options. Most Australian insurers will require the driver to have an Australian motorcycle license, regardless of the country you are riding in. You will need to check with the individual insurer to see if you will be covered with a Vietnamese license. Also, not all insurers will cover a 125 cc motorcycle. Kindly go through the attached page for more info on motorcycle travel insurance.

        I hope this helps.

Thank you and have a wonderful day!

        Cheers,
        Jeni

        Hi Debbie,

Thank you for reaching out to Finder.

You may need to contact the travel insurance companies directly, as many don’t let you purchase a policy for a trip more than 12 months in advance. That said, companies like Australia Post Travel Insurance and World2Cover will allow you to book 18 months and 548 days in advance, respectively. Hope this helps!

        Cheers,
        Reggie

        Hi Karen,

Thanks for getting in touch! Since you will be travelling to an international country other than Australia, it is advisable to get travel insurance regardless of the period, if by land or by plane. To search for travel insurance, simply use the table at the top of this page and enter the details needed. When you’re done, click GET MY QUOTE and it will show the providers according to your requirements. As a friendly reminder, carefully review the Product Disclosure Statement of the product before applying. You may also contact the insurance provider should you have any questions about their policy. Hope this helps!

        Cheers,
        Nikki
