Top pick for value: Youi comprehensive car insurance
What we like about Youi
- Youi ranked number 1 in SA for value in our Finder Awards. It covers more than most insurers but typically costs less. For example, it's the only car insurance provider out of 32 to automatically include roadside assistance with its comprehensive policy and it also won the national 2023 Finder Car Insurance Award for best features.
- It covers accidental damage, theft, towing costs and new car replacement if yours is written off within the first 2 years of it being registered.
- It's one of the cheaper policies on the market. Youi comprehensive car insurance costs an average of $640 per year in SA. That makes it the fifth cheapest insurer out of the 32 we researched.
- It only pays for the first 2 call-outs in a year. Standalone roadside assistance policies usually cover all call-outs.
Best for price: Bingle comprehensive car insurance
What we like about Bingle
- Bingle consistently offers the cheapest comprehensive car insurance out of the 32 providers we researched. It had an average cost of $482 per year in South Australia. That's over $57 less per year than PD Insurance, the second cheapest insurer in SA.
- It covers the essentials including fires, theft, floods and accidents, plus accidental damage to other people's cars and property.
- If you're looking for lots of additional inclusions with your car insurance, look elsewhere. Bingle is cheap because it covers damage to your car and others but not much else.
Stuck on who to choose? These 3 providers were ranked as the top 3 comprehensive providers for best value in our 2023 Finder Awards when looking at South Australia.

Types of car insurance in SA
There are 4 types of car insurance available in South Australia.
- CTP. The bare essentials. Everyone in SA is legally required to have compulsory third party insurance. If you injure someone on the road, CTP will pay for their medical care.
- Third party. If you hit someone else's car or property while driving, third party insurance covers the damage. It won't pay to fix your car though.
- Third party fire and theft. This covers damage to other cars and property, like third party insurance, and your car if it is stolen or damaged by fire.
- Comprehensive. This is the only type of car insurance that covers damage to your own vehicle. Comprehensive also pays out for weather damage, vandalism, theft and more.
How to find cheaper car insurance in Adelaide and regional SA
Use online discounts
Lots of insurers offer a first-year discount simply by buying online. These can knock a lot off your first 12 months. Keep an eye on them increasing prices substantially the following year though (and switch if they do hike your prices up).
Consider pay as you drive car insurance
If you don't drive that far each year, you might want to look into pay as you drive car insurance. This could be especially useful if you're in Adelaide and generally don't need to travel far.
Raise your excess
A higher car insurance excess can significantly reduce your premiums. As long as it's still affordable, you may want to raise your excess.
"Here's a really simple way to save money on your car insurance. Call your insurer and tell them you're considering leaving because of the price. Lots will offer to lower it. If they don't – that's not a big deal either because you probably can find a cheaper price elsewhere."
