As part of our 2023 Car Insurance Awards, our insights team compared over 1,000 quotes from 37 different comprehensive car insurance policies.
NRMA performed above average, with only 10 brands scoring higher. Here's how NRMA compares to some other car insurers.
Finder Score for car insurance
We analyse over 100 car insurance products and rate each one on price and features. What we get out the other end is a nice round number between 1 and 10 to help you start comparing.
To make sure we're comparing apples with apples, we collect quotes for 8 different personas, then work out the value of 19 different car insurance features. Our team then does some fancy maths to get the Finder Score, taking both price and features into account.

NRMA offers comprehensive car insurance at a competitive price. While it's not a budget insurer, only 10 brands offered cheaper car insurance than NRMA. Take a closer look using the table below.
All the protection of Comprehensive, with extra benefits including a hire car as standard, if your car can't be driven due to an insured incident. Excess-free glass cover is also included, along with taxi fares of up to $250 if your car can't be driven after a covered accident.
Covers your car for accidental damage, collision or crash, vandalism, theft, fire and severe weather. You'll also get a new replacement car if yours is written off within its first two years, tools of trade are covered up to $1,500 and emergency repairs are covered Up to $800.
This covers you for accidental damage to your own car, fire, theft and a few other benefits. It's a basic level of cover so the benefit limits are lower.
All the protection of Third Party Property Damage, plus cover for your car if it's stolen or catches fire. You'll also be able to claim for hire care costs after a theft or attempted theft. Be aware, theft and fire expenses are only covered up to $10,000.
A basic level of protection covering you for accidental damage to other people's cars or property. You're also covered for towing costs and any damage to your car if the accident was caused by an uninsured driver.
Mandatory for NSW motorists, you need CTP insurance before you can register your vehicle. CTP covers medical costs for people injured in road accidents. It doesn't offer any cover for your property or vehicle - only injuries.
The specific benefits of this bespoke cover depend on a vehicle's make and model, as well as any special features it might have. Cars can be covered for wedding hire, special occasions, hobbies or recreation, but not if you use it regularly or drive it more than 9,000km a year.

Hi Michele,
Thanks for getting in touch. Finder is a comparison service and not an insurer. While NRMA is not part of the Finder panel of insurers, they do offer caravan insurance. You may want to read our caravan insurance guide to find out more about this type of insurance.
All the best,

My car was taken from my drive way one morning, I got out of the car pressed the buzzer to lock and walked towards front door, where I unlocked and walked in, little while later I started my house work open front door and seen my car was gone, I called police to report it, and about 40 mins later he rang back informing me my car had been in a accident and the driver was gone. I called NRMA and told them what had happened, and now after being accused of being the driver or paying someone to take my car, i have been left out of pocket and still don’t know whats happening with my now not so brand new car. is this unfair how i am being treated?
Hi Emma,
Thanks for your question. Finder is a comparison service and we are not permitted to provide our users with personalised advice. If you believe you were treated unfairly by your insurer, you should contact your insurer and go through their dispute resolution process. If after going through this process you are still unhappy with the result, please get in touch with the Financial Ombudsman Service.

I hope this was helpful,

just how genuine is the New for new replacement promise? My son bought a new car in 2015 which was written off. NRMA says there are no 2015 models available and want to pay out a lower market value. We have confirmed with the manufacturer that the 2016 model is EXACTLY the same as the 2015 model. Is it reasonable to say that because NRMA can’t find a 2015 plated model in 2016 that a payout is the only option. Why give a 2 year new for new promise if you only intend to replace a vehicle plated in the same year of purchase?
Hi Steve,
Thanks for your question. finder.com.au is a comparison service and not an insurer and we are not permitted to provide our users with personalised financial advice. According to the NRMA product disclosure statement (PDS):
New replacement vehicle
If we [NRMA] agree to pay your claim as a total loss, then you may choose to replace your vehicle with a new one if all of these apply:
• You bought your vehicle as a new or demonstrator vehicle
• The incident we [NRMA] cover happens within 2 years from when your vehicle was first registered
• Your vehicle’s tare weight is less than 2.5 tonnes.
Covered
• To replace your vehicle with a new one that has the same make, model, engine size, equipment level and paint type if it’s available in Australia
• To replace any of the following that apply to your vehicle:
– modifications
– options
– accessories
• The cost for 12 months registration and CTP insurance for the new vehicle.
Conditions
• Any credit provider noted on your current Certificate of Insurance must agree we [NRMA] can replace your vehicle
• The new vehicle must be currently available in Australia
• You need to give us the refund you get for your unused registration and any CTP insurance premium.
All the best,
Richard
